On the 31st December 1992 a new set of regulations concerning the use of visual display units (VDU's) came into force. These regulations apply to anyone who is defined as a VDU 'user'. Within the regulations a user is defined as anyone habitually using a VDU as a significant part of their normal work. The regulations set out a series of duties which will be placed upon the employer. Principally they are as follows:

Analyse VDU workstations and take steps to remedy any risks found.

Assess the risks to the operators health from the use of the workstation, and record this assessment.

Ensure that all new workstations meet the requirements of the regulations.

Ensure that all existing workstations meet these requirements by 31st December 1996.

Train 'users' in VDU use and recognition.

Provide 'users' with appropriate rest breaks.

Entitles 'users' to eye and eyesight tests where appropriate.

It is the duty of the employer to produce an assessment of VDU use. Such a process can be time consuming and may require specialist ergonomic advice.
