On the 31st December 1992 a new set of regulations concerning the use of visual display units (VDU's) came into force. These regulations apply to anyone who is defined as a VDU 'user'. Within the regulations a user is defined as anyone habitually using a VDU as a significant part of their normal work. The regulations set out a series of duties which will be placed upon the employer. Principally they are as follows:


It is the duty of the employer to produce an assessment of VDU use. Such a process can be time consuming and may require specialist ergonomic advice.
