Manual Handling

On the 31st December 1992 the Manual Handling Operations Regulations came into force.
These regulations apply to any task which involves moving a load manually,
and sets out a series of duties which are placed on the employer and employee.
Principally they are as follows.
- Avoid as far as possible, the need for manual handling operations
which involve the potential for risk of injury.
- Assess any hazardous manual handling operations which cannot be
avoided. The assessment should include consideration of three main areas;
the individual, the load and the working environment.
- Reduce the risk of injury resulting from manual handling
as far as possible.
- Inform and train employees with regard to the risks involved
in manual handling operations
It is the duty of an employer to produce a written assessment of the manual
handling tasks involved in their operations. Such a process can be time consuming
and may require specialist ergonomic advice.
Singleton Associates will help your company to assess any manual handling tasks, produce a written
report and if required redesign the workplace and work practices to minimise
the risks involved.
Singleton Associates offer a comprehensive training service in relation to manual handling for
non clinical applications, for all levels of staff. Our non clinical training course is
3-4 hours, it consists of both theory and hands on sessions. This course can also be accredited by the 'Chartered Institute of Environmental Health' for a small additional charge.
